The Pinellas County School District is the 22nd largest district in the nation and 7th largest in the State of Florida. With over 13,000 employees, Pinellas County Schools is the largest employer in Pinellas County. The Hillsborough County School District was ranked as one of "the most outstanding school districts in the United States " in the 14 th annual Expansion Management Magazine report card of the nation's best public schools. Scoring in the top one-third of the 2,800 districts studied, the SDHC received a Blue Ribbon designation for the second time, and the top score among Florida 's largest districts.

The America Prepared Campaign, Inc. noted that the district “is well on its way to becoming one of the most prepared of the country's 20 largest school districts,” in their study, Preparedness in America's Schools: A Comprehensive Look at Terrorism Preparedness in America's Twenty Largest School Districts , Sept. 2004.

Nine district schools have been designated national Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education; two have been so designated twice.

The district's music programs were ranked among the 100 best in the nation for the fourth time in 2005 by the American Music Conference.

Progress Village Middle Magnet School was selected by Magnet Schools of America as a Magnet School of Excellence ; and Dowdell, Sligh and Young middle magnet schools have been named Magnet Schools of Distinction in 2005.

Coleman Middle School students scored the highest among regular middle schools in the state on FCAT Writes. Scoring a 4.7 last year, this year's 4.9 was a significant leap.

The performance of our high school students is always of special significance since these students represent the final result of the pre-kindergarten through 12th grade educational system. However, we are proud of the following facts:

Our elementary students scored above the national average in math and reading in all grade levels, reaching the 63rd percentile in grade 3 math.

The number of elementary students who met the State's high performance criteria of scoring a Level 3, 4, or 5 has increased. We are moving more students every year to higher levels of achievement, and Twenty-five of our elementary schools increased their overall writing scores.

Over the years, our FCAT writing scores have increased dramatically since the inception of the State's writing assessment program.

The older students also scored well on state and national assessments:

In math, our middle and high school scores were significantly higher than the national average, reaching the 71st percentile in the tenth grade. These scores rank us number one in grade 10 math when compared to all our surrounding school districts. This is something we can all be proud of.

A 3.5 score or higher is one of the requirements at the state level to be deemed a high performing school. In writing all but one of our high schools had a composite score of 3.5 or higher, three (3) of these with a score of 4.0 or higher.

And in reading, our secondary students met or exceeded the State's high performance standards, at Levels 3, 4, and 5.

The district scores in the FCAT science are above the State average in all three grade levels tested. The ninth graders scored especially well as their scores ranked them as the 9th highest of the 67 school districts.

Pasco is now the 13th largest school district in the State of Florida and the 92nd largest in the nation. There are a total of 66 schools: 37 elementary schools, 11 middle schools, 9 high schools, 4 specialized education centers and 5 charter schools.
