Riverview is an unincorporated census-designated place located in Hillsborough County, Florida , near Brandon . As of the 2000 census, the community had a total population of 12,035.

History

Riverview was founded in 1856 on the Alafia River 's south shore. It was then known as Peru because of the Peruvian Mining Company, which mined various mineral from the Alafia. The area's first school was built in 1893 , inside the Peru Baptist Church. The Riverview name first came into usage in the early 1940's. Some of Riverview's settlers include the Bourgees, Boyettes, Hackneys, Mansfields, Moodys, Scotts, Thompsons, Whitts, and the Yeomans. The area founded by the Boyette family is now Boyette, Florida .

Geography

Riverview is located at 27°52'25" North, 82°19'12" West (27.873478, -82.320050) 1 .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the community has a total area of 24.4 km² (9.4 mi² ). 23.7 km² (9.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.08% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000 , there are 12,035 people, 4,434 households, and 3,400 families residing in the community. The population density is 508.4/km² (1,316.1/mi²). There are 4,800 housing units at an average density of 202.8/km² (524.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 85.81% White , 8.33% African American , 0.44% Native American , 1.33% Asian , 0.07% Pacific Islander , 1.98% from other races, and 2.05% from two or more races. 9.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,434 households out of which 38.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.1% are married couples living together, 12.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% are non-families. 17.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the community the population is spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 33.8% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 8.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.4 males.

The median income for a household in the community is $51,016, and the median income for a family is $58,417. Males have a median income of $40,297 versus $28,036 for females. The per capita income for the community is $23,302. 6.8% of the population and 4.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 10.1% are under the age of 18 and 4.4% are 65 or older.
