Zephyrhills is a semi-rural community 35 miles northeast of Tampa. US Highway 301 goes through town and connects Zephyrhills with Dade City 8 miles to the north. The town is close to major cities and attractions but far enough away from the hustle and bustle to make it a comfortable place to stay. Surrounded by cattle ranches, citrus groves, farms and recreational areas Zephyrhills is a popular place for people who want the country atmosphere with all the conveniences of shopping, dining and recreation nearby.
Zephyrhills is the second largest town in Pasco County and sits in the southeast corner of the county which makes it an easy drive to Orlando attractions. Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater and Tarpon Springs are an hour or less away. Because it is centrally located a drive to the east coast of Florida is about 2 hours.
There is always something to do in Zephyrhills. The local airport is known for its skydiving facilities. There are festivals throughout the winter months and the yearly Strawberry Festival in early March is held in Plant City, a 20 minute drive from downtown Zephyrhills. The Kumquat Festival in Dade City is also a great attraction nearby. The Hillsborough State Park is a great place to spend some time to camp, fish and boat.
Zephyrhills is a city located in Pasco County, Florida . As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,833. According to the U.S. Census Bureau 's 2004 estimates, the city had a population of 11,854.
In 2004 there was a controversy over naming a street after slain activist Martin Luther King, Jr. The decision by the city council to rename Sixth Street angered many residents who felt they were not consulted nor even warned beforehand and objected on various grounds to the change. Accusations of racism followed almost immediately, and the controversy divided the town. After considerable debate, the council adopted a compromise in which the street would not be renamed but the signs would be labelled with both the original name and King's name.

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 16.4 km² (6.3 mi² ). 16.2 km² (6.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.10% water.
Demographics
As of the census GR2 of 2000 , there are 10,833 people, 4,944 households, and 2,986 families residing in the city. The population density is 667.1/km² (1,728.2/mi²). There are 6,167 housing units at an average density of 379.8/km² (983.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.63% White , 2.79% African American , 0.23% Native American , 1.12% Asian , 0.03% Pacific Islander , 1.60% from other races , and 1.61% from two or more races. 5.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,944 households out of which 20.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.5% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.6% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.10 and the average family size is 2.63.
In the city the population is spread out with 18.1% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 21.2% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 32.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 49 years. For every 100 females there are 83.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $27,548, and the median income for a family is $33,502. Males have a median income of $29,375 versus $21,648 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,047. 12.1% of the population and 9.3% of families are below the poverty line . Out of the total population, 15.9% of those under the age of 18 and 9.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
